Brookside caters for all levels of physical ability from the fully able to the very frail and provides specialist health, care and support services for older people with dementia. Built on a former primary school and day centre site, Brookside Retirement Village is situated in the heart of Ormskirk, close to all the local amenities and village life. The communal facilities include a fitness suite, hair dressing salon, launderette, PCT surgery (also available to the local community) specialist dementia garden and greenhouse and a bistro which is also open to the public. The village was constructed using a closed panel timber frame superstructure, at the time, the largest such structure in the UK. All the timber used in the project was sourced from sustainable forests. In addition to the closed panel timber frame, other sustainable elements are included such as photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, smart energy and a combined heating and power plant, used to provide efficient heating. Sedum roofs are installed to all the low level flat roofs and the result is that the scheme achieved Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and Secured byDesign accreditation. The scheme received a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the North West LABC Excellence Award.
